Action Research is a pragmatic approach to resolve problems in an inclusive manner with affected communities.

The wikipedia page on Action Research has a good description. In a nutshell, it's based on Lewin and Dewey, it's iterative, looks a bit like a [Deming (PCDA) cycle]. But while Deming's PDCA cycle is more about continuous improvement, action research concentrates on problem solving and has a stronger philosophical grounding.
